SYSA Coaches Of The Year

MBL coaches Kenneth Mostow and Norman Elder were honored by the Seattle Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) with the Girls Coach and Boys Coach of the Year Award respectively.
Ken was recognized for his 18+ years of coaching youth soccer (many years with the Oneders girls team) and his effort around community outreach - bringing soccer to underserved neighborhoods.
Norm received the prestigious award for this more than 15+ years of coaching (Blue Comets) and his unwavering support for players with diverse backgrounds.
The Mt. Baker / Lakewood Soccer Club is very proud to have Ken and Norm as coaches within our community and we are excited about the recognition they have received.  Congratulations!

Mt Baker / Lakewood Youth Soccer Club

  • Volunteer positions - We need to fill jobs to make running the club more institutional.  A list is below.  It’s important that many of these get filled so the next person filling the president position doesn’t feel overwhelmed.  Read it, ignore the typos, and get back to me with what you can do.

Job Short description Long description
President Look pretty I'm hoping that with the jobs below all filled, being club president would not be too onerous.  The club president has been the representative to the SYSA board for our club, but we are the only club that does that.
Registrar  Assign players to teams Online registration has made this job easier, but you need to be able to use software and make decisions.  This is the most important club job.
Registrar - Mod Assign players to teams Splitting the registrar job between MOD and older teams is a reasonable division, some larger clubs break it up by gender too.
Treasurer -  temporarily filled by: Keep the books This must be a trustworthy, capable person with some knowledge of small business accounting and the ability to use accounting software.  I've been doing this. It is easier now that most of the registration is by credit card.
Secretary - Minutes, mailings, etc. Schedule meetings, take notes This person will keep our meetings scheduled, including board meetings.
Mod Coordinator Organize the U6-U9 participation A MOD coordinator sets up the U6 program and works out problems with the U7 - U9 teams.  We have done this ad hoc with someone stepping up to get the U6 or U7 going the last few seasons and I have done the rest.
Coaching Development Organize coaching clinics and the like SYSA rules require each club to have a coaching director that communicates training opportunities to the rec coaches.
Equipment Coordinator - #5 Balls Organize equipment purchase Thank you Garth.  We have split this job up at one time.
Equipment - safety Organize first aid kits to teams Thank you Anne.
Website  Maintenance Give the website some design thought
Communications - Database - Mailings Prepare the mailing to families and coaches I have sent out a mailing each spring to remind members to register and give some information out about the season.  Email is not completely effective at this.  A person who can manage a mail merge job is needed.
Publicity Get word out about registration Pput up posters, send fliers to schools.  These people can expand the outreach as much as they want.  Annie Barett has done this and it's time for someone new.
Field Assignments  Create the practice field schedule Thank you Roberta.  It is time to train someone to take this job over.
Parks - Fields liaison Be the contact to deal with Parks dept if there are problems A point person to communicate our problems with fields to Parks and follow up.
Uniform Coordinator Organize uniform purchase Thank you Will. This job has the opportunity for someone who likes to shop to help the club.  Also, we can review the policy of making players purchase their uniforms.  All other rec programs provide the uniforms.
Photo Coordinator Organize photo day Thank you Carolyn.  The photo day provides those memories for a lifetime and generates about a $600 donation to the club annually. Without a new volunteer here, we will not have a 2008 photo day.
Net Coordinator Make sure the goals at fields have decent nets Keep track of the nets and arrange to get new ones as they wear out.
Storage 1 provide  garage space to store extra stuff Some coaches can't store their equipment over the offseason, we have a stockpile of balls and nets
SYSA Rep Represent Club at SYSA board meetings Participation is mandatory.  I have done this as did Terry before me.  This person must want to know what is going on in SYSA and be intellectually involved.
Judicial Rep  Represent Club at SYSA judical committee.  Dispose of red cards and cheating coaches. Thank you Jordan
Referee Assignor Make sure the club has referees for it's home games. Thank you Peter and Ken before you
By-Laws assist in the incorporation of the club I have some example of other clubs bylaws.
Customer Service Respond to people who are having problems registering I have spent a lot of time helping the few people that have trouble registering to get their players registered.  My thought is that a couple of volunteers could do this.  Qualifications would be ability to use the bonzi software and a willingness to help
